Where a large dog may go in Wisconsin: parks, forests and dog parks
Protection dogs need steady, controlled outings. Here is what the DNR and one major city actually allow.

State parks: the DNR baseline
The DNR page on pets in state parks says pets must be on a leash no longer than 8 feet at all times. It lists places where pets are not allowed, apart from service animals:
- Buildings, picnic shelters, amphitheaters and observation towers
- Picnic areas, except designated pet picnic areas
- Beaches, except designated pet swim areas
- Playgrounds unless signed as open to pets, and groomed ski trails
- All of Copper Culture State Park, Heritage Hill State Park and Hoffman Hills State Recreation Area
Two named examples
Kettle Moraine Northern Unit
Pets are allowed in all campgrounds and most trails, with an 8-foot leash. Mauthe Lake and Long Lake have pet picnic areas. Details on the DNR forest page.
Governor Dodge State Park
Leash up to 8 feet, no leaving a pet unattended, and designated pet swim and picnic areas. Details on the DNR park page.
Madison: fenced parks and permits
Madison lists nine fenced off-leash dog parks, including Brittingham, Demetral, McCormick, North Star, Odana School, Quann, Sycamore, Walnut Grove and Warner. Every dog needs a city dog license plus a daily or annual Madison Parks dog permit, and leashes stay on between the car and the gate.
A powerful dog that is not yet reliable around strangers and other dogs is a poor fit for an off-leash park. Ask any seller how the dog behaves around unfamiliar animals before you plan to use one.
