Common questions

How old must a dog be before it needs a license?

The statute speaks of dogs over five months old, and the tag is expected on the collar when the dog is outdoors. See chapter 174.

What happens if my dog bites someone?

The owner is liable for damages, and the amounts can double when the owner had notice of an earlier unprovoked bite. Speak with an attorney about your facts.

Can I walk a large dog off leash in a state park?

The DNR requires a leash of 8 feet or less at all times, with no exceptions listed on its pet rules page other than service animals.

Where are off-leash dog parks?

Madison lists nine fenced parks, and each dog needs a city license and a Madison Parks dog permit. Other cities have their own programs.

Is a heated kennel enough for winter?

State law requires suitable shelter for outdoor dogs, but the humane society advises keeping dogs inside and limiting outdoor time in the cold.

Will every insurer cover a German Shepherd?

No. Some insurers exclude certain breeds or any dog with a bite history. Disclose the dog and get a written answer.

Can I buy from someone out of state?

Often, but arrange a visit or a live video, and do not send a deposit for a dog you have not seen.

Does this website sell dogs?

No. K9PN forwards requests and does not breed, sell or train dogs.

Are the dogs in the pictures available?

No. The photos only illustrate the guide.
